United is moving it's Headquarters to downtown Chicago. Finally!! Today was my last day in our suburban office. Only 350 people will move to the new Headquarters building, the remaining nearly 4000 will stay in the existing location which will be named the Operations Center. This building designed by Skidmore, Owen and Merrill (architects of Sears Tower in Chicago) was state of the art in the 60's. But after 40+ years it is really showing it's age, and so is the neighbourhood!
No more 1- hour commutes (2-hours when it snows!).
No more stretchpants or other delightful suburban fashion.
No more powerwalkers in the basement.
Instead, a 15 minute train ride, lunches in Millenium Park, shopping on Michigan Avenue, venti non-fat triple shot no foam caramel machiattos etc..
The new office is on 77 W. Wacker, a landmark building in the Loop, along the Chicago river.
My office will be on the 14th floor.
